Outdoor Leadership

A lot goes into being a competent outdoor leader and much of it has nothing to do with one's abilities to hike, climb, or paddle! Teaching, facilitation, communication, counseling, conflict resolution, judgement, decision making, and problem solving are just some of the skills needed to effectively lead a group in the outdoors. Let me help you bring new insights and fresh perspectives to your group on what it means to be an excellent and effective outdoor leader.

Technical Skills

Need some help conducting a training on a particular outdoor activity? I can teach basic to advanced skills in a variety of activities from backpacking to rock climbing. I also run team-building and facilitation workshops.

Medical Response

Proper medical certification is a foundational part of any outdoor program. I am certified through the American Red Cross to teach courses in First Aid, CPR/AED, and Wilderness and Remote First Aid and can help your staff feel confident in their abilities to respond well in emergency situations.

Spiritual Formation and Ministry

Ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of  these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand  is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.                                                                                                                        Job  12:7-10

The idea of the wilderness has long held a special place in the Christian tradition of spiritual formation. Whether one is looking at the wilderness narratives in Scripture, reading the stories of the desert fathers and the monastic movements, or going to a modern day Christian camp, they can find the idea of the wilderness spread across the history of Christianity. If you want to learn more about the blending of outdoor recreation and ministry and how they work together to produce amazing spiritual transformation, I would love to talk with you more.
